Château la Tour Carnet
Certainly one of the oldest and most beautiful of the Médoc, the castle La Tour Carnet is built in the 12th century. He owes his name to the squire Carnet who receives it as an inheritance from Lord Jean de Foix as a reward for his bravery. Classified 4th vintage in 1855, its wine is at the time in the hands of the family of Leutken which gives him thus new hours of glory.
Then, affected like all by the diseases of the vine, the wars and the economic crises, it knew a long period of decline which ends in 1972 when the domain is acquired by Louis Lipschitz, shipowner Girondin. He restored the buildings and replanted the vines and then transferred the property to his daughter Marie-Claire Pélegrin in 1978.The latter kept it until 1999, when Bernard Magrez, owner of Pape Clément, acquired it. Since then, major renovations and improvements have been made to the château, the vineyard, the vat room and the cellar, based on the advice of the famous Michel Rolland. Since 2010, Frédéric Chabaneau has been the technical director to replace Anne Le Naour.
The 73 ha vineyard, located a few kms east of Saint-Laurent du Médoc in the direction of Beychevelle, is planted on soils of various qualities composed of clay, limestone and grave Garonne and Pyrenean on limestone basement . For red, the vines are Cabernet-Sauvignon (45%), Merlot (50%), Cabernet Franc (3%) and Petit Verdot (2%).
White vines are distributed between Sauvignon (33%), Sauvignon gray (29%), Sémillon (33%) and Muscadelle (5%).The average age of the vines is 30 years and the planting density of 8 to 10,000 feet / ha.
Culture is traditional by using the principles of reasoned culture. The estate produces the great red and white wine and, in red, a second wine "Les Douves Château La Tour Carnet".
