Château Gruaud-Larose
The first traces of the castle date back to 1725 and Joseph Stanislas Gruaud. His descendants, including Abbé Gruaud, widened the field which produced in 1755 sixty tons of wine already estimated. In 1778, the castle passed into the hands of Sebastien Larose Chevalier Joseph, husband of the granddaughter of Joseph. It is he who gives its present name in 1781 to the property, it was then extended to 80 ha. After his death in 1812, the castle was sold at auction to a consortium of three families. Wine is ranked 2nd grand cru in 1855. In 1867, the difficulties of understanding between owners lead to the division of the property into 2 areas, which find their unity in 1935 thanks to the purchases of the Cordier family. After passing through the hands of institutional investors such as Alcatel Alsthom in 1993, enabling significant investments, including the renovation of the cellars, the castle was bought in 1997 by Bernard Taillan company of Jacques Merlaut, merchant and owner of Bordeaux chateaux . His son, Jean Merlaut, is now in charge of the property. The vineyards cover 80 hectares and are planted on soil of Garonne gravel on subsoil clay and limestone with a Cabernet Sauvignon grape varieties (61%), Merlot (29%), Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot (5% each). The average age of the vines is 43 years.
