Château Cantenac Brown
Classified Growth in 1855
At the beginning of the 19th century, John-Lewis Brown (1769-1851) acquired an estate and chose to build an English Renaissance castle (Tudor) in Cantenac that reminded him of his Scottish origins. His name will remain forever attached to the Grand Cru Classé. His young son, John-Lewis Brown (1829-1890), a famous animal painter and Chevalier of the Legion of Honor, also stayed there as a child.
In 1843, the property is ceded to Mr. Gromard, banker of his state. It is the Bordeaux merchant and owner of several castles in Médoc, Louis Armand Lalande (1820-1894), who will enlarge and enrich the building after the 1855 ranking.
