Château L'Evangille
The estate was born in the middle of the 18th century under the name of "Fazilleau". At the beginning of the XIXth century, the family, the Church, which formed it, sold it to a lawyer named Isambert who then renamed it "L'Evangile". It then reaches a size of 13 ha close to the size of today. In 1862, it passes to the hands of Paul Chaperon who built the current castle and sits the reputation of the vintage which is mentioned as "premier cru de Pomerol" in the 2nd edition of "Cocks & Féret" of 1868. It remains in the family Chaperon and that of his heirs Ducasse until 1990, when it was acquired by Baron Eric de Rothschild. Major turning point because the estate can benefit from significant investments and the technical competence of the teams of Domaines Baron de Rothschild led today by Charles Chevallier, assisted locally by Jean-Pascal Vazart. In a purely qualitative approach, a second wine was created and, in 2004, a new vat room and a new underground wine cellar were put into operation to allow strictly fragmented vinification.
Magnificently situated on the plateau of Pomerol between Pétrus and Cheval Blanc, the 16 ha vineyard covers a variety of clay soils mixed with ferric dirt, clayey gravels and gravelly clay silicas. The vineyard consists of Merlot (80%) and Cabernet Franc (20%), intermediate between those of Petrus (95% Merlot) and Cheval Blanc (40%). The average age of the vines is 30 years and the planting density of 6,000 feet / ha. The vines, managed in a piecemeal way, are cultivated in a traditional and meticulous way respecting the environment.
Since the 1990s, the estate produces a second wine "Coat of the Gospel".
