Château Mouton Rothschild
of quality. Judged impossible to market under the name of great wine but of good quality, he marketed the vintage 1930 under the name "Mouton-Cadet", which will serve as a time of "second wine" to Mouton before becoming a brand wine.
The commercial success of Mouton-Cadet was such that he almost immediately had to appeal to other sources of grapes well beyond the vineyards of the two classified wines while remaining high in Mouton (more than 3 million bottles were marketed in 1975!) . Baron Philippe expanded the estate and bought the neighboring castle of Armailhac in 1933. From 1945, he transformed the label of Mouton into a work of art by making each year draw a label by a renowned artist. He created in 1962, with his wife Pauline, the "Museum of Wine in Art". Finally, exceptional, he obtained the just reclassification of the wine as first cru in 1973 transforming the motto of Mouton "First, then, second not deign, Mouton am" in "First I am, second I was, Mouton does not change". Following the death of Baron Philippe in 1988, his daughter, Baroness Philippine, and her children are in charge of the estate. Important works are underway in 2011 to rebuild the cellars. General and technical management has been provided since 2004 by Philippe Dhalluin who benefits from the advice of Jacques and Eric Boissenot, the famous Médoc oenologists.
Located at Le Poulayet, at the north-west exit of Pauillac, and adjoining Lafite, the 84-hectare vineyard, magnificently exposed on the side of a small hill of 40m, extends on deep soils deep underground Of limestone. The grape varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon (83%), Merlot (14%) and Cabernet Franc (3%). The average age of the vines is high (44 years) as the planting density (10,000 feet / ha). Cultures are conducted in a traditional way and carried out with the utmost care and constant supervision.
Since 1993, the estate has been producing a second wine called "Le Petit Mouton de Mouton-Rothschild" and, since the 80's and in small quantities, a white wine called Bordeaux "Silver Wing".
